This update broadens the core conversational capabilities of ChatGPT for Free and Go accounts, while maintaining separate restrictions on other features and tools.
GPT-5.6 includes several models such as Luna, Sol, and Terra, each tailored for different performance needs. Luna is the faster, more cost-effective option within the lineup. OpenAI mentioned that approximately one billion people now use ChatGPT weekly for various tasks like research, planning, writing, and searching. With this latest update, Luna becomes the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users, while other GPT-5.6 models remain accessible through specific products and plans suited for different workloads and levels of access.
Broader free access granted, but tool restrictions stay in place
Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro will now receive the GPT-5.6 Sol model for both routine and more intricate reasoning tasks. The company explained that Sol offers more targeted responses and cuts down on unnecessary details when shorter replies suffice. Paid subscribers can also now adjust a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature allows users to control how much processing power the model dedicates to a given request, useful for research, coding, writing, planning, and other activities requiring varying reasoning levels.
OpenAI also shared results from internal testing focused on the factual accuracy of its newest models. The assessments covered financial, medical, and legal questions that necessitated detailed factual responses. The company reported that GPT-5.6 Luna produced about 62% fewer answers containing at least one factual mistake compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. Similarly, GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated a reduction of approximately 68% in such errors under the same testing conditions. OpenAI also noted improvements in responses involving dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these details influenced the accuracy of the final reply.
New safeguards for younger users added to updated models
The GPT-5.6 models feature enhanced safeguards aimed at users believed to be under 18. These protections restrict content related to romantic roleplay, age-limited challenges, and claims that might promote replacing real-world relationships. Additional boundaries are enforced on sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. OpenAI stated that it has implemented extra evaluations for responses involving younger users. These abuse safeguards will remain in effect when unlimited text conversations are available on Free and Go accounts as part of the expanded ChatGPT access.
This rollout affects the main ChatGPT service but does not alter every product that utilizes GPT-5.6. The GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will stay unchanged with this update.
