MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the available Gemini model options for free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will only have access to Flash-Lite through Gemini Apps. They will no longer be able to use Flash or Pro under the updated policy. The company outlined these modifications in its latest support documentation for consumer artificial intelligence services. These rules pertain specifically to personal Google accounts and do not apply to accounts managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Existing Google AI Plus subscribers will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash once the new restrictions are implemented. However, their subscription will no longer include access to Pro. Google has not provided a single, universal transition date for all AI Plus users. Instead, the company states that affected customers will be notified via email about when their access will be altered. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Designed as a lightweight Gemini model, Flash-Lite offers quick responses suited for everyday tasks. Flash offers additional features while maintaining fast response times across various request types. Pro is intended for more complex workloads, such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google claims the model can process text, files, images, and videos while employing deeper reasoning. Responses generated by Pro may take longer than those from other Gemini models due to the increased processing needs.
Wider model access remains for paid Gemini plans
Google is also rolling out effort settings categorized as low, medium, and high, which can be adjusted according to the user’s plan. Higher effort settings enable models to allocate more resources for detailed responses, but they also draw more from the user’s usage allowance. Customers on AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will gain access to Deep Think, a feature designed for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that applies maximum parallel reasoning when handling intricate requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier changes to how Gemini Apps calculate usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits, with allowances resetting every five hours until weekly limits are hit. The calculation considers factors like prompt complexity, feature usage, and conversation length. Premium features and advanced models tend to consume these allowances more quickly than basic requests. The company extended these usage limit changes to users under 18 on July 24.
Different usage limits apply to Google AI subscriptions
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the service’s standard usage caps. AI Plus members enjoy twice that allowance, while AI Pro subscribers have four times the standard limit. AI Ultra provides either five times or 20 times the AI Pro allowance, depending on the plan. Features like Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can draw more heavily on these limits. Consequently, paid plans offer larger usage quotas along with broader model access.
The October updates impact Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts and do not regulate all Google AI offerings. Work and school accounts are governed by separate access rules, and developer services follow their own regulations. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. Beginning October 9, free personal users will rely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access structure comes into effect.
